JEAN FAURE (Toulouse 1896-1983)
Born in an environment favourable to his development as a cabinetmaker, Jean Fauré began working at the age of 13 in the workshop of Léon Arbus, where his father was a worker. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse (1910-1914) and completed his training in Alet’s studio. In 1923 he took part in the Exhibition of Applied and Decorative Arts in Bayonne-Biarritz (with honours) and in that of Decorative Arts in Tangier. His pieces are characterized by a clean line, rigorous volumes and traditional materials. Alongside less expensive furniture, he multiplies luxurious sets and creates original furniture built according to his own criteria, in which aesthetics prevail, with the combination of noble woods (rosewood, amaranth, Macassar ebony, bubinga, tamo from Japan, etc.) and bronze ornaments. Fauré took an active part in the renovation of Toulouse furniture art, both from a theoretical point of view by reflecting on his profession, hence the writings published in Art Méridional, and from a practical point of view by applying his conceptions of cabinetmaking to his creations.
